An Iroquois Stan Hill Antler Carving

Find our entire collection of fine art.  Video Transcription: Hi, Jennifer here with City Farmhouse Antiques and I am here with this week's find of the week. You got a sneak peek of this piece before I came back with my haul last week, but I wanted to show you this beautiful carving. This is a moose antler carved by the famous Iroquois artist Stan Hill. Just a gorgeous piece. He never intended to be an artist. He actually started out farming as a kid and then he went into ironworks and worked with steel. When World War II  hit he became a deep sea diver and worked for the military repairing battle ships which I think is pretty cool. His son unfortunately passed away in 1971 and it changed his life forever. He went to Alaska to get away and go mountain climbing where he saw his first bald eagle. I think for all of us that appreciate nature and the beauty of something as spectacular as a bald eagle it had almost a spiritual effect on him. Many of his carvings over the years were of bald eagles. As he continued to use things from nature, like these antlers, his art became a way for him to connect with his spirituality. At the age of 55 he began a second career as an artist. His pieces have been in many museums such as the Smithsonian. He did a lot of moose and deer antler carvings. This piece is pretty substantial and is about 15 inches tall by 16 inches wide. This piece really depicts a bald eagle well with the gold eyes and the curvature of the beak. You can see here it is signed Stan Hill and dated 1994. Unfortunately, Stan Hill is no longer living. He passed in 2003. This piece would be gorgeous in a lodge or beautiful home up in the mountains with a lodge style or southwest décor. I just love this piece, especially the color and the detail and of course, the story behind the artist.
